Behind the image

This photograph was taken as a controlled grassland burn was being carried out in Serengeti. The smoke began to drift across the plains, and for a while the tall grass seemed completely still — until these lions suddenly lifted their heads from where they had been hidden.

What stayed with me was the way they paused and scented the air, alert to the change around them. The long grass, the haze, and the stillness of that moment also captured something essential about the bush: you do not always see what is there until it rises in front of you.
