Behind the image

This photograph was captured in Nyerere, Tanzania, shortly after the national park reopened to visitors following the Covid period. At the time, the experience felt almost unreal — vast landscapes, very few people, and long quiet hours in the bush with only my guide and me.

We came across a remarkable scene involving several lions, a hippopotamus calf, and a large crocodile that had become trapped in the middle of the confrontation. The pride had dragged the prey far from the river, while the crocodile refused to let go. The tension in that moment, and the quiet power of the lions around it, stayed with me long after the encounter.

This close portrait was taken during that unforgettable experience.
