Behind the image

This photograph was taken during a private visit to a local Maasai community in Karatu. I spent a few hours as their guest, listening to stories about their traditions, daily life, and the ways modern life has changed their customs and cattle herding practices — not always for the better.

During the visit, they sang and performed traditional dances, and the women also showed their handmade work. The small leopard and giraffe sculptures seen in the styled image were purchased directly from the women of this community.
